Asylum

Each year, individuals come to the United States seeking protection because they have experienced persecution or fear future persecution based on:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Nationality
  • Membership in a particular social group
  • Political opinion

If you qualify for asylum, you may be allowed to stay in the United States. To apply for asylum, submit Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal, within one year of your arrival in the U.S. There is no fee for filing.

You can include your spouse and children who are in the U.S. in your application, either when you file or anytime before a final decision is made on your case. To include a child, they must be under 21 and unmarried. For more details, contact our law firm to consult with an experienced immigration attorney.
